The Students of MCHS

There they are, the top dawgs of the school, 4th formers!

The people of Belize are very diverse. There is the Carribean culture along the coast, and a large Mestizo population from Guatemala and other parts of Central America. The national language of Belize is English. This attracts many families who wish to learn English and live in an English speaking country, but either cannot or don't want to live in America. Belize was a British colony until when they won their independence in 1981, and some of the colonial influence is still around. All of this is packed into a very small country, nestled between Mexico, Guatemala and the Carribean Sea.

This means that Mount Carmel High School students come from varied backgrounds. The majority of students are Mestizo and Creole, but there are several of Maya descent, also a handful of Garifanu, German Mennonites, Chinese, Taiwanese, Lebanese, and Americans.

In one class there may be students with five different first languages, other than English. This can be a challenge as a teacher, but it is also wonderful to see students from very different backgrounds working together.

Just messing around...
