What You Can Do to Help

Mount Carmel High School would not exist, at least in its present form, without the donations of so many who believe in what we are doing and are willing to support us in our efforts. We do not have any on going fundraising program, though we have sought money from abroad for all of our buildings and much of our equipment. In general we receive approximately 25% of our annual budget from former volunteer teachers, their families, friends, and relatives. Our school has been built with donated money, with less than 20% of the total cost paid from funds generated within Belize. Until this year our students have had little involvement in fundraising, but they have responded to the present financial crisis with car washes, barbecues, bake sales, and ideas for additional fundraising activities.

Mount Carmel High School has NEVER turned away a child because they could not pay tuition. In certain cases we have even given students travel money so that they could afford to take the bus to school. Tuition is $200 BZE ($100 US) for each of the three terms. However many families cannot afford this, so we have a workstudy program. These students have a job to perform after school every day, and based on their need we award either a partial of full scholarship. We believe this to be a good system, however we often find ourselves in financial trouble.

It is hard to communicate the fact that money is lacking and so your contribution will do something. A school takes money to run. Besides paying teachers, paper, ink cartriges for printers and the copy machine, electricity, the phone bill. Down here at MCHS money is always short. One hundred American dollars pays the stipend for eight volunteer teachers for one week, or it buys chalk and paper, or it pays the phone bill. It does not go into a bank account and sit around collecting interest.
